Dear Editor
I am thoroughly befuddled by Kurt Jansen's(PSB hearing officer) preliminary recommendation regarding the 4 turbine East Haven Wind farm. It appears to me that the PSB is making decisions with little thought to what is happening in the world. That the project is not appropriate because it is within sight of the Champion Lands (which are open to commercial logging), is simply outrageous and short sighted. To have held this developer hostage for almost 3 years and at a cost of over 1 million dollars and then say no because it's next to the Champion Lands, with little regard for the positive benefits for our environment and for our cost for energy, says to me, we have a troubled process.
The opinion to oppose the project goes against everything this State stands for, independence, clean environment, and leadership. Vermont cannot ignore the looming energy crisis we have in the near future. We can't just live in our pretend world and ignore global warming and the need for local clean power generation.
If people are truly concerned about keeping our mountain tops and ridge lines free from any development, then we need to be consistent in our thoughts and actions. Should we call for the closure of all ski areas (think ridge lines, mountain tops and view sheds) that are close to preserved State and Federal lands and demand they be returned to their "pristine" state. Yes, I know, that sounds about as silly as denying the East Haven Wind Farm a Certificate of Public Good. I can't imagine any reason why any developer of renewable energy generation would waste their time and money in Vermont after learning of this decision.
As a member of the House Natural Resources and Energy Committee I will be very hesitant to offer the Public Service Board anymore legislation that allows them flexibility and the ability to use their "good " judgment. It may be time to exert more control over the PSB by the Legislature. We have a Governor that won't or can't lead on this issue and now the PSB has flown some truly questionable "colors". Should we all just sit back and do nothing about our energy future!
If you believe in the need to immediately develop renewable energy generation in Vermont, then you need to let this Governor and Legislature know, in no uncertain terms, how you think!
Thanks
